Wednesday, 14 October 2009

The latest results for the annual school sport survey from the Department of Children, Schools and Families are out today and for the first time measure the number of young people taking part in 3 hours of PE and school sport a week.

The figures show that 50% of five to eighteen years olds are taking part in 3 hours of PE and school sport with the survey also showing increases in the number of young people involved in inter and intra school competition and leadership and volunteering.Schools are now offering an impressive 18 sports on average for pupils to take part in, which compares to 14 in 2003/04.  Cycling has seen the biggest increase this year.  Schools now have links to an average of 8.2 listed clubs.

Previous school sport surveys have only measured the number of young people participating in 2 hours of PE and school sport with the 2007/08 survey showing that 90% of pupils were reaching that figure.  The Government’s long-term aim, is to offer all children five hours of sport per week, including two hours within the curriculum, and three hours outside the curriculum by 2012.

Lode Heath SSP's results will be published in due very soon.
